Lucid Lens is a holistic dream app designed not only to interpret dreams but also to enhance the quality of sleep and dreaming. With features that help users relax and drift into a dream-ready state, Lucid Lens supports them from the moment they prepare for sleep to when they wake, capturing the essence of their dreams while memories are fresh. Built with a minimalist, non-intrusive interface, Lucid Lens offers interpretations that encourage personal growth and self-reflection, delivering insights that deepen over time. Each interpretation is paired with visually captivating clips, allowing users to save or share them as cherished reflections of the subconscious or as sparks of creative inspiration.

Context

Great minds and normal people alike have been exploring the depth of their subconsciousness for centuries.

Throughout history, dreams have served as windows into the human psyche, with every civilization weaving its own tapestry of interpretation and meaning. This ancient practice isn't merely folklore—it has sparked revolutionary breakthroughs in science and innovation. The double helix structure of DNA came to James Watson in a dream, while Niels Bohr's vision of atomic structure emerged from a dreamlike revelation.

The scientific exploration of dreams has been championed by some of humanity's greatest minds. From Sigmund Freud's groundbreaking work on the unconscious to Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious, and even Leonardo da Vinci's practice of drawing inspiration from his dreams, these pioneers recognized dreams as gateways to deeper understanding.

Modern dream interpretation bridges this rich historical legacy with contemporary psychological insights, offering a powerful tool for personal growth. By decoding the symbols and narratives that emerge in our dreams, we unlock a direct channel to our subconscious mind, gaining valuable insights into our deepest thoughts, emotions, and aspirations.

Brand Experience

Defining the brand experience is an essencial and powerful aspect in creating a strong emotional bound between the user and the product.

Understanding the usage contexts of the app and the user's needs and mentality, was essencial in creating a clear idea of the tonal expectations of our users. To define the personality of our brand, we developed a set of experience principles. These were used to sense‐check design decisions, articulate core values and describe key attributes the app experience should uphold for both the users and the brand. The principles were used constantly to drive the aesthetic, feel and overall tonal direction of the app.

Visual Identity

A minimalistic, reductionist approach with a strong inspiration from icons of modern art.

Inspired by the Constantin Brancusi's philosophy, the strategy of the brand is to reduce the complexity of the brand identity to its essence, letting the conceptual content speak for itself.

Color Palette

A dark mode first color palette.


A purely functional and minimal color palette designed for the main use case of the app, which is to record dreams when the user is still half asleep, or when the user is going to sleep. The shades are designed to be used in a dark environment to make sure that the users' eyes are not too stressed. For this reason, red light is the best choice.

The Framework

App architecture and interaction strategy

We've approached the app top‐down by defining the overall structure and experience by quickly noting town main features and sketching the interface. Starting broad and slowly evolving into something tangible expressed through very raw paper wireframes covering the app map.

Based on our user journeys, we began to think about particular flows and usage contexts that better help to support the sleep induction and dream recording. We worked fast, and often jumping straight to prototyping and quick testing.

The final interface design was made by toaking in acount the sleepyness factor and the fact that the user will be recording dreams in the dark too. We managed to strip the interface down to one big red button for the dream recording feature, providing the ability to edit the dream later.

Dream Recording


We decided that the app should always open with the dream recording screen first, and then the sleep induction screen can be switched by the user. The sleep inducion feature is secondary to the dream recording feature. We needed to make sure that the dream recording feature is super easy and fast to access.

Dream interpretation


As for the interpretation feature, we decided to use a minimalist approach, with a twist. The app generates a short video clip for the dream desctiption, allowing the user to visualize it better, get inspired and share it with others.

For the sleep induction feature, we decided to use a soundscape to help the user drift into a dream-ready state, allowing the user to choose between different sounds or mix them together.

White Noise

It is proven that the monotone nature of white noise can help the user drift into a dream-ready state and fall asleep faster.


Ambient Sounds

Ambient sounds can have a relaxing effect and contribute to falling asleep faster.


Guided Meditation

Guided meditations are a great way to help the user fall asleep faster and get into that dream-ready state.
